The UC Santa Cruz Arboretum supports a rich diversity of birdlife drawn to its protected, biodiverse landscape. Fascinated by the many species that depend on this habitat, I created a field guide to the birds of the UC Santa Cruz Arboretum—a natural history-based guide featuring 58 self-illustrated birds commonly seen in the gardens. This independent project had a significant impact on the development of my art practice, from the quiet time in the gardens with binoculars to the quiet time at home illustrating the birds.. Weekly birding sharpened my observational skills, while the challenge of illustrating, designing, and producing the guide pushed me to develop both patience and confidence. I collaborated with gardeners, printmakers, and fellow illustrators—connections that continue to inform and inspire my creative process. Most importantly, the project taught me how art can bridge science and community, and I hope it inspires others to explore and protect the natural world around them.
